Basic Craps Strategy

Craps is hands down one of the most popular games in the casino. The reason for this is that it is relatively easy to learn and begin playing. You can play craps online or you can play it offline at a brick and mortar casino. Regardless of where you play, you might want to use a craps strategy to help you make the most of your efforts. There are a lot of different books, articles, and discussions on craps strategies so it can be overwhelming, but it needn’t be.

Your craps strategy should start with learning as much as you can about the game. Many players don’t do well at craps simply because they do now know the rules all that well. The better you know the rules the more adept player you will be, helping to make the right bets to put the odds on your side instead of stacking them against you. It is a good idea if you are new to craps to play for fun before you play for real money just to ensure that you have the best chance possible of seeing winnings associated with the game.

Focusing on your odds is going to be the very best craps strategy. Like all casino games, craps is all about odds so it makes sense to make your strategy all about placing bets that give you the best odds of winning. The Pass Line bet is often favored because it has a lower house advantage of just 1.41%. Many people consider this the best bet, yet the Don’t Pass bet actually reduces the house advantage to 1.36%. The best that you want to avoid are those that give the house the edge, such as bets on four and 10, which have a house edge of 6.67%! Additionally, field bets are not all that favorable as they give the house an edge of 5.56% and if you bet on the big 6 and the big 8 you are going to be giving the house a 10% advantage. These are not odds that you want if you want to start winning at craps!

Another important, but often overlooked, part of a craps strategy is to manage your money. Bankroll management is important because it will ensure that you do not spend more than you can afford to lose. You need to go into every craps game assuming that you will lose, because the house does have the edge. When you look at it this way, you are more likely to be realistic about how much you can actually afford to spend. Then, if you get lucky you’re in great shape, but you’re also in great shape if you lose it all. Consider how much you can really afford while maintaining your currently standard of living before you play, and then stick to this dollar amount. Once it’s gone, you’re done playing!
